PYSANKY EGG WORKSHOP (home studio) $250 April 12th-13th, 11am - 4pm

This workshop will focus on the decoration of Pysanky Eggs, a Ukrainian folk art traditionally practiced in the Springtime. Nicole’s take on it is more freeform but traditional designs will also be explored. Students will be led through the entire process beginning with a design on a blown-out egg. Next, tools called kiskas and beeswax are heated with a candle to melt the wax for drawing onto the shells. The eggs are bathed in dye that becomes progressively darker after each wax layer is added. When the work is finished the egg is passed through the flame of a candle and wiped clean of the wax revealing the vibrant colors of the finished pysanky egg! The method is similar to that of batik. Different kinds of eggs can be used; chicken, duck, goose or even ostrich! Imagine working with the smell of sweet beeswax and glow of candles and gem-like jars of dyes to create your own original Spring Pysanky!
