Reverse Glass Painting

  • Oregon School of Art 2185 Southwest Park Place Portland, OR, 97205 United States (map)

Discover the unique and captivating art of Reverse Glass Painting, also known as Verre Églomisé. This technique involves painting on the backside of glass and viewing the finished artwork from the front, where it takes on a luminous, jewel-like quality that’s truly one-of-a-kind.

Unlike traditional painting methods, this process begins with fine details, which are then layered over with broader areas of color—essentially painting in reverse. Students will start by practicing on smaller glass pieces using acrylics and will have the opportunity to experiment with additional materials like paper or fabric. Once comfortable, they’ll move on to creating larger works.

One of the many advantages of this medium is that no special framing is needed—reclaimed or pre-framed glass works beautifully. Plus, because the paint is sealed beneath the surface, your artwork can be cleaned just like regular glass.

This course is an accessible and playful introduction to a centuries-old art form. No prior experience is necessary—just curiosity and creativity!
